Why Design Affects Conversions
Great web design is not just about aesthetics — it directly impacts whether visitors take action. Research shows that 94% of first impressions are design-related, and users form an opinion about your website in just 50 milliseconds. A well-designed site builds trust, guides users toward conversion actions, and reduces bounce rates significantly.
Mobile-First Design Principles
With over 60% of web traffic coming from mobile devices, designing for mobile first is no longer optional. Mobile-first design means starting with the smallest screen size and progressively enhancing for larger screens. This forces you to prioritise essential content, use touch-friendly tap targets (minimum 44px), and ensure readable font sizes without zooming.
Typography and Readability
Typography can make or break a website. Use a maximum of two font families — one for headings and one for body text. Body text should be at least 16px with a line height of 1.5–1.7 for comfortable reading. Ensure sufficient contrast (minimum 4.5:1 ratio for body text) and use whitespace generously to prevent visual fatigue.
Color Psychology in Web Design
Colors evoke emotions and influence decision-making. Red signals urgency and energy — ideal for CTAs. Blue conveys trust and professionalism. Limit your palette to 2–3 primary colors plus neutrals. Use your brand’s primary color strategically for CTAs so they stand out from surrounding content.
Page Speed and UX
Page speed is both a UX issue and an SEO ranking factor. A one-second delay in load time can reduce conversions by 7%. Optimise images (use WebP format), enable caching, minify CSS and JavaScript, and use a CDN. Target a Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) under 2.5 seconds and a Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) below 0.1.
